基本劇情
故事開始於蒙特利爾,也結束於蒙特利爾。一名在找尋靈感的作家(拉菲·斯波 Rafe Spall 飾)無意間得知派·帕帖爾(伊爾凡·可汗 Irrfan Khan 飾)的傳奇故事。派的父親(阿迪勒·侯賽因 Adil Hussain 飾)開了一家動物園。因這樣特殊的生活環境,少年派(蘇拉·沙瑪 Suraj Sharma 飾 )對信仰與人的本性自有一套看法。在派17歲那一年,他的父母決定舉家移民加拿大以追求更好的生活,而他也必須離開他的初戀情人。
主人公派的父親經營著一個動物園,使得他從小就很了解動物的習性。在後來舉家遷往加拿大時,在船上他們遇見一位殘忍成性的法國廚師(傑拉爾·德帕迪約 Gérard Depardieu 飾),與他們同船的還有動物園裏的一些動物,因為父親打算把它們趁機以高價賣掉。然而貨船中途沉沒,派的家人全部遇難。
Pi和救生艇被船上掉落的斑馬砸進海裏,他僥幸落在救生艇的艙蓋布上得以生存,於是,他開始了在海上漂泊227天的曆程,與他同時處在救生艇中的,除了那隻斷了一條腿的斑馬外,還有一隻鬣狗、一隻猩猩以及一隻成年孟加拉虎,由於海關官員的失誤,這隻孟加拉虎注冊了一個正兒八經的紳士的名字:理查德·帕克。在救生艇上的最初三天,鬣狗咬死了猩猩,活吃了斑馬,理查德·帕克咬死了鬣狗。接著,17歲的少年Pi海上生存的故事,就是如何對付理查德·帕克的故事。
日本貨輪失事後,17歲的少年派海上生存的故事便這樣開始了,他由最初的與理查德·帕克相互提防,想要殺死對方的心理逐漸變為相互依賴,也變成了派生存下去的一種動力。

Luckily for the circus trainer, decisions about social rank among higher animals are not always based on brute force.
