基本劇情

故事開始於蒙特利爾，也結束於蒙特利爾。一名在找尋靈感的作家(拉菲·斯波 Rafe Spall 飾)無意間得知派·帕帖爾(伊爾凡·可汗 Irrfan Khan 飾)的傳奇故事。派的父親(阿迪勒·侯賽因 Adil Hussain 飾)開了一家動物園。因這樣特殊的生活環境，少年派(蘇拉·沙瑪 Suraj Sharma 飾 )對信仰與人的本性自有一套看法。在派17歲那一年，他的父母決定舉家移民加拿大以追求更好的生活，而他也必須離開他的初戀情人。

主人公派的父親經營著一個動物園，使得他從小就很了解動物的習性。在後來舉家遷往加拿大時，在船上他們遇見一位殘忍成性的法國廚師(傑拉爾·德帕迪約 Gérard Depardieu 飾)，與他們同船的還有動物園裏的一些動物，因為父親打算把它們趁機以高價賣掉。然而貨船中途沉沒，派的家人全部遇難。

Pi和救生艇被船上掉落的斑馬砸進海裏，他僥幸落在救生艇的艙蓋布上得以生存，於是，他開始了在海上漂泊227天的曆程，與他同時處在救生艇中的，除了那隻斷了一條腿的斑馬外，還有一隻鬣狗、一隻猩猩以及一隻成年孟加拉虎，由於海關官員的失誤，這隻孟加拉虎注冊了一個正兒八經的紳士的名字：理查德·帕克。在救生艇上的最初三天，鬣狗咬死了猩猩，活吃了斑馬，理查德·帕克咬死了鬣狗。接著，17歲的少年Pi海上生存的故事，就是如何對付理查德·帕克的故事。

日本貨輪失事後，17歲的少年派海上生存的故事便這樣開始了，他由最初的與理查德·帕克相互提防，想要殺死對方的心理逐漸變為相互依賴，也變成了派生存下去的一種動力。

Until it knows its rank for certain, the animal lives a life of unbearable anarchy. It remains nervous, jumpy, and dangerous. Luckily for the circus trainer, decisions about social rank among higher animals are not always based on brute force.
