On the cutting edge或 at the cutting edge 最早出現在五十年代，它的字麵意思是銳器的鋒利的部位，現在最通常的隱喻義是處在最前沿的位置。例如Ever since it outlawed public school segregation in 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court has been on the cutting edge of civil rights advances. (Time, 1988)
類似的短語leading edge也屬於這種隱喻用法，不過起先它的意思是指機翼或螺旋槳葉。
Cutting edge目前還在廣泛使用，而leading edge則多少有點過時。如今可用來描述新概念，新款式和新產品的詞彙實在太多了。
