when在中學英語教學中出現的頻率較高，用法較多，現歸納如下：

一、用作副詞

表示“什麼時候”，常用作疑問副詞、連接副詞和關係副詞等。

1.用作疑問副詞，表示“何時，什麼時候”，構成表示時間的特殊疑問句。例如：When will they come back?（他們什麼時候回來？）

2.用作連接副詞，意思是“什麼時候”，引導名詞性從句（主語從句、表語從句和賓語從句）。例如：Do you know when they are coming?（你知道他們什麼時候來嗎？）

3.用作關係副詞，意思是“當……時候，在那時”，引導定語從句。例如：I will never forget the day when I joined the army.（我將永遠忘不了我參軍的那個日子。）/It happened ten years ago, when I was a child.（事情發生在十年前，那時我還是個孩子。）

二、用作從屬連詞

1.引導時間狀語從句，意思是“當……的時候”。例如：It was raining when we arrived.（我們到達時天正下著雨。）

2.引導原因狀語從句，意思是“既然”、“因為”，相當於since、when引導的從句往往放在主句之後。例如：How can they learn anything when they spend all their spare time playing computer games?（他們把所有的空閑時間都用來玩電遊，還能學什麼東西呢？）

3.引導讓步狀語從句，意思是“即使”、“盡管”、“雖然”，相當於even though、although。例如：They kept trying when they must have known it was hopeless.（他們明明知道那事沒有希望了，但他們還繼續在幹。）

4.引導條件狀語從句，意思是“如果”，相當於if。例如：Call me at once when anything goes wrong with the computer.（如果計算機發生故障，立即叫我。）

三、用作並列連詞

when用作並列連詞時的意思是“正在……，這時……突然”，連接兩個並列句。例如：We were doing our homework when the light went out.（我們正在做家庭作業，就在那時燈熄滅了。）

四、用作關係代詞

作關係代詞的when可引導定語從句，意思是“那時”。例如：Mr. Smith came to China in 2002; since then he has been working in Beijing University.（史密斯先生於2002年來到中國，從那時起他一直在北京大學工作。）

五、用作疑問代詞

表示“何時，什麼時候”，例如：Until when can you stay?（你能呆到什麼時候？）

六、用作名詞

常與where、how等並列使用，指“（事件發生的）時間”。例如：Tell me the when and (the) where of it.（把這事的時間和地點告訴我。）

現在完成時態,是過去發生的事情,強調對現在造成的影響,和過去沒有關係的,when翻譯成什麼時候，強調過去什麼時間做了什麼，對於現在沒有直接的關係。 如：When did you mend your computer? -- yesterday 此句子是說明過去時間做的一件事情，對現在沒有造成影響。

如How long have you been here? Three days 你到這裏多長時間了？ 三天了。 這個句子裏用現在完成時態，強調過去到這裏一直持續到現在。

when 引導的特殊疑問句 除了完成時態，其他時態都可以，具體要看你問的是什麼時間的事情，然後判斷好謂語就可以了。 因為提問的是時間，所以在問句中不用時間狀語。

不一定，要看主句的時態，或者表述的具體意思，比如：I want to be a doctor when I grow up.這裏就不是用過去時，因為when後麵表示的是將來要發生的事。

I saw him sitting when I went in the house.這個句子when後麵的動作跟主句裏的saw是同時發生在過去，所以用過去時。
