1. To be attached to one thing (to a certain view) and to look down upon other thing (views) as inferior--this wise men call a fetter.固執某一件事物(或某種見解),而輕視其他事物(或見解)是卑鄙的,智者稱它為「束縛」。
2. Bonds do not exist for those to whom naught is dear or not dear.沒有貪愛和憎恨的人,就沒有束縛。
3. There is no fire like lust, no grip like hate; there is no net like delusion, no river like craving.貪心是最猛烈的火,憎恨是最壞的執著,迷惑和錯誤的見解是最難脫逃的網,愛欲是最難渡過的河流。
4. All desires have in them little pleasant taste but rather much potential suffering.所有的欲望,隻有小小的甜味,而卻隱藏著相當多的苦頭。
5. The sensible man is not influenced by what other people think.明智的人不為別人的想法所影響。
6. Do not be led by reports, or tradition, or hearsay.不要被任何報導、傳統、或流言所左右。
7. Do not believe what is passed from mouth; Do not believe rumors ; Do not believe the infallibility of texts.不要輕信別人的道聽塗說,不要相信謠言,不要以為書是絕對可靠的。
8. May all beings be happy and secure ; may their mind be contented!願所有的人都幸福安寧,內心滿足!
9. Let one’s thoughts of boundless love pervade the whole world--above, below and across--without any hatred, without any enmity.讓我們心中無限的愛能遍布整個世界,無論在宇宙的那一個角落,都沒有絲毫的怨恨和敵意。
10. May I be strenuous, energetic and persevering !May I be patient! May I be able to bear and forbear the wrongs of others! May I ever keep a promise given!願我努力精進,勤奮不懈;願我有耐心能容忍並寬恕別人的過錯,願我能信守自己立下的諾言。
11. He who wishes his own happiness by causing pain to others is not released from hatred, being himself entangled in the tangles of hatred.為了追求快樂,而把快樂建築在別人的痛苦上,便會受到怨恨的困擾,而無法擺脫怨恨。
12. Look at every one equally, irrespective of rich or poor, noble or of low caste.平等地對待每一個人,而不論其貧富或貴賤。
13. The attendant should make the patient happy and hopeful.探視病人應使患者充滿希望和快樂。
14. Those who adhere to the principles of wisdom, have right attitudes, and true to their words and discharge their duties with responsibility are loved by people.人們愛戴忠於真理、態度良好、言而有信、對職位負責的人。
15. When a man speaks or acts with good intention. Then happiness follows him like his shadow that never leaves him.當一個人的言談和舉止懷著良善動機,快樂便像影子般地跟隨他。
16. From moment to moment, a wise man removes his own impurities, as a smith removes the dross of silver.聰明的人時常清除內心的汙垢,就如同工匠清理銀礦中的雜質。
17. Make haste in doing good, restrain your mind from evil. Whosoever is slow in doing well, his mind delights in evil?及時行善,以免你的心裏再起壞念頭。凡是不能及時行善的人,內心常會生起惡念。
18. One should give up anger; one should abandon pride; one should overcome all fetters. I’ll never befall him who clings not to mind and body and is passionless.一個人應該舍棄憤怒,拔除傲慢,超越所有的束縛。不執著心靈和物質的人,內心可以得到真正的安寧,而不受外在的影響。
19. Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without!寧靜來自內心,勿向外尋求!
20. May I be firm and resolute! May I be kind, compassionate, and friendly! May I be humble, calm, quiet, unruffled and serene! May I serve to be perfect! May I be perfect to serve!願我能堅決勇敢,有毅力和恒心。願我能仁慈、友善、富有同情心。願我能謙卑、寧靜、沉著、安詳。願我能邁向完美的道路,而且能完善地服務別人。
21. He who sees other’s faults is ever irritable, the corruptions of such as one grows. He is far from the destruction of the corruptions.尋找別人過失,而且容易發怒的人,苦惱越來越多。離開沒有煩惱的境界也越來越遠。
22. The wise man builds no hopes for the future, entertains no regrets for the past.聰明的人不奢望未來,也不追悔過去。
23. Only things with which a man identifies himself are able to disturb his mind-only that which concern “ myself ”can give me grief.執著自我的人,心智將會受到幹擾。處處隻考慮自我的人,將給自己帶來憂愁。
24. The world is in continuous flux and is impermanent.世界變遷不已,並非是常久不變的。
25. Change, impermanence is characteristic of life.變化和無常是生命的特徵。
26. Let him be cordial in his ways and refined in conduct ; thereby full of joy he will make an end of ill.待人熱誠,舉止文雅,隻要每天充滿著喜悅,苦惱就會消失得無影。
27. Being neither jealous nor greedy, being without desires, and remaining the same under all circumstances, this is nobility.不嫉妒、不貪婪、沒有私慾,在任何情況下,內心都持有那份寧靜,這就是高尚!
28. He who has tasted the sweetness of solitude and tranquility becomes free from fear and free from sin.當一個人品嚐到孤獨與恬靜的美味時,便不會產生恐懼的心理和犯罪的行為。
29. The cause of suffering is selfish desire, whether it is the desire for pleasure, desire for revenge, or simply desire for a long life.痛苦的根源來自私慾,無論企求快樂、報複,或隻企求長壽,都會導致痛苦。
30. Desire causes suffering because it can never be completely gratified.慾望會導致痛苦,其主要原因乃是慾望永遠無法完全滿足。
